Success Stories

namith-story

He was 82 and on dialysis — but his story wasn’t over yet.

At 82, with a long history of diabetes and hypertension, hospital visits were nothing new to him. He was told that he is suffering from severe kidney dysfunction, the diagnosis came quickly. Given his age and comorbidities, it was presumed to be the natural progression of chronic disease - End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Hemodialysis was initiated immediately, with the understanding that it would now be a permanent part of his life.

But his family wasn’t ready to settle. They sought a second opinion at AINU Hospital - with hope - and one simple question: “Is there anything else we can do?”

Our doctors examined him thoroughly. They noticed something often overlooked - a chronic foot ulcer. It was more than a skin wound; it was a signal. That single observation prompted a deeper evaluation. Could this be infection-related glomerulonephritis (IRGN) instead of irreversible ESRD?

Confirming the diagnosis required a renal biopsy - not a small decision in an 82-year-old with multiple comorbidities. After detailed counselling and family support, the biopsy was performed. The result gave the answer IRGN - a potentially reversible condition.

Despite the risks, treatment with immunosuppression was started, carefully balanced against his age and medical complexity.

He remains completely off dialysis, maintaining stable kidney function with medical management alone. Active, alert, and grateful - because precision care didn’t accept assumptions. It asked better questions.

He was 82, presumed to have ESRD.

But an expert insight changed the diagnosis - and his life. Precision care made it possible.
